Lasik Safety

The reported figures for safety and efficacy are open to interpretation. In 2003, the Medical Defence Union (MDU), the largest insurer for doctors in the United Kingdom, reported a 166% increase in claims involving laser eye surgery; however, the MDU averred that these claims resulted primarily from patients' unrealistic expectations of LASIK rather than faulty surgery.

Patient Satisfaction

Various surveys have been performed to determine patient satisfaction with LASIK. These surveys have found most patients to be satisfied, with anywhere from 9298% of respondents describing themselves as satisfied. Some patients with poor outcomes from LASIK procedures report that they have significantly reduced quality of life due to vision problems, and have expressed concerns over the way that LASIK is marketed to potential patients. Patients who have suffered LASIK complications have published websites in an effort to educate the public about the risks, and to provide forums where prospective and past patients can discuss the surgery.

Lasik in China

Denver, Colorado LASIK provider, Icon LASIK, is proud to announce the opening of a new Icon LASIK clinic in Lianyungang, People's Republic of China. After three years of planning and preparation, the new clinic in Lianyungang is now performing LASIK eye surgery. The clinic in Lianyungang is Icon LASIK's first LASIK clinic in China.
Icon LASIK's laser eye surgery clinic in Lianyungang is the first of several planned locations in China. The new Lianyungang clinic also represents the first western LASIK center in Lianyungang. Lianyungang is located in Jiangsu province which is roughly in the middle of China's east coast. With a population estimated to be 4.65 million, Lianyungang is the first of several opportunities for the Denver, Colorado based Icon LASIK to introduce its high quality, custom laser vision correction care to Chinese patients.
The rise in disposable income in China's middle class and the lack of LASIK centers in China uniquely position Icon LASIK to capitalize on China's growing demand for laser eye surgery. With several additional locations planned to open before 2008, Icon LASIK is poised to become a premier provider of laser eye surgery services in China.

Wavefront-guided LASIK

Wavefront-guided LASIK is a variation of LASIK surgery where, rather than apply a simple correction of focusing power to the cornea (as in traditional LASIK), an ophthalmologist applies a spatially varying correction, guiding the computer-controlled eximer laser with measurements from a wavefront sensor. The goal is to achieve a more optically perfect eye, though the final result still depends on the physician's success at predicting changes which occur during healing.

Some things to look at prior to surgery

In order to get the best results in eye surgery, you must do your own research. Even if a doctor tells you you're a good candidate for LASIK surgery, here are some things you should ask before having the procedure:-Who determines if you're a candidate? Is that person an optometrist or an eye surgeon?-Is your surgeon a corneal specialist?-Is that surgeon available for follow up care?-What are the surgical outcomes for my doctor?-Do they perform pre- and post-op exams as well as the surgery? We advise to interview at least two or three doctors to find the best one. Surgery this serious requires the best for best results.

Improved Vision Options

Surgical options: Implantable lenses, a relatively new and expensive alternative with unknown long-term implications; or, LASIK eye surgery. LASIK surgery doesn't fix focusing problems. Instead, it gets around the problem by creating monovision giving you near vision in one eye and distance vision in the other. Some people may have trouble adjusting to monovision, which can affect depth perception and ability to see in low light. And some people find they still need reading glasses. A doctor may ask to you to experiment with contact lenses before proceeding with the surgery. LASIK for the treatment of myopia is very successful in people with low to moderate myopia and normal corneal thickness. But, LASIK surgery for the correction of presbyopia is not a very good option and not generally recommended.
